- What motivated you to take on a leadership position?
Unfairness. There was a distinct lack of opportunity for women to become leaders and all the decisions seemed to be being made by men.
- Were you encouraged or mentored during the process of becoming a leader?
Yes, I was encouraged by family, friends and two former bosses – both men.
- How did you reach your current position – your career path, studies, opportunities?
By getting involved in the local community, working in tourism and local government.
- How has your leadership role impacted your relationships with family, friends and colleagues?
Relationships with family and friends were sometimes strained by the lack of time I had to spend with them but it was a decision I made and they have been supportive.
- What responsibilities do you believe you have to those who “look up to you” as a leader?
It is important for me to set both moral and physical standards.
- How do you measure your success as a leader?
By being re-elected, by forming a great team of staff to serve the community and by my ability to inspire young people.
- What has inspired you to maintain your current position, and do you have aspirations for further leadership roles?
I work to make a difference and implement projects that are needed in the community. I have always believed in having aspirations and setting myself challenges – these are needed to step out of our comfort zones and make things happen.
- What advice would you give other women who are aspiring to be future leaders?
Go for it! You can do it!
- How do you handle conflict and adversity in your leadership role?
By doing something about it. The quality of our outcome is measured by the quality of our communication. I am always upfront about issues.
- Who is your leadership role model, and what qualities do they display that you admire?
Ghandi: Courage, compassion, strength, inner belief in oneself and leadership.
