Dancespace 383
  1. What motivated you to take on a leadership position?

There was no other Australian women in my era who were achieving world recognition – I felt I had the ability and the drive to achieve this – and so that was the motivation.

  2. Were you encouraged or mentored during the process of becoming a leader?

Yes – I had people I looked up to. They fell into 3 categories. Firstly their talent/ability at what they did 2. Great knowledge of what they were doing and thirdly no major ego – just a great desire to learn and be the best at what they did. I also felt inspired by other great leaders – whether they be in sport or any other industry – both men and women.

  3. How did you reach your current position – your career path, studies, opportunities?

By moving to the UK. My parents gave me the opportunity to travel to the UK to further my studies so I was able to study off the best in my profession and also perform on the world stage at every opportunity.

  4. How has your leadership role impacted your relationships with family, friends and colleagues?

I was lucky to have most of my relationships within the industry and as such that is where I met my husband. My friends came to accept that it was my career first and them second – however I have always tried to have a balance – and colleagues – I have a very good relationship with all my colleagues – healthy competitiveness – but all in good spirits.

  5. What responsibilities do you believe you have to those who “look up to you” as a leader?

In todays world I feel I carry a very big responsibility to pass on to the younger generation what it takes to become a leader – the drive – assertiveness – competitiveness – but at the same time to remain humble. I am a fair person and I feel that I need to be seen as a fair – honest and a hard working person. On a bigger plan – I feel I have a huge responsibility in regards to the direction of my industry in Australia as the direction is very poor at the moment- and as a result no-one is achieving what I have achieved and this is very sad.

  6. How do you measure your success as a leader?

I am only 1 of 2 Australian women ever to achieve what I have achieved. The difference with me compared to the other woman is that I have come home – back to Wollongong – in the hope of inspiring some other girls to believe enough in themselves to go out and try to do what I have done.

  7. What has inspired you to maintain your current position, and do you have aspirations for further leadership roles?

I love my art form – and I am true to it. I think it is the fact that I have never stood still – in that I mean I have always tried to keep abreast of trends – new information – or the correct information for what I need. I take inspiration from everything I see – read and experience and apply that to what I do. I have never been afraid to ask questions…even to famous people I have met on our travels: Todd Woodbridge – Franky Fredericks(Former world 200m champion) – Wayne Ferrara(Runner up US Open Tennis) - Greg Rusedski (Runner Up US Open Tennis) - Roger Black (Silver medallist 400m Sydney Olympics) – Dawn French – Richard E Grant – Elton John (we performed for him at his Birthday Party in London) – the list goes on...

  8. What advice would you give other women who are aspiring to be future leaders?

Belief – determination and hard work.

  9. How do you handle conflict and adversity in your leadership role?

I address it. I think it is important not to sit back and let something fester – or let people manoeuvre things for their own advantage – I try to be outspoken in regards to these things – (within reason)

  10. Who is your leadership role model, and what qualities do they display that you admire?

My leader ship role model is a lady called Vicky Barr. 5 times World Champion. She is English and one of my coaches. The reason why I chose her as she not only taught me how to dance and become a champion and she also taught me “life lessons”. How to behave in certain situations – how to be professional in my work – the importance of so many things –other then just dance information.
