Learn more about the Illawarra region.
|
|
The women profiled on this site are recognised and well known leaders from all sectors of the Illawarra. They are leaders in Education, Health, Community, Sports and the Arts sectors within the Illawarra region. Due to their contribution to the Illawarra region, these women have been invited to participate in this Leadership initiative with the aim of strengthening the region through diverse representation and inspiring other women to want to work together and contribute towards a better future for the Illawarra.
Each woman profiled on this site demonstrates commitment and generosity towards the ongoing mentoring of future leaders and encourages them to stay and contribute towards a better Illawarra in the future. Through sharing their journey future leaders will be educated and inspired to follow in their footsteps and join them on the journey towards bringing positive growth and change in their respective sectors of interest within the community.
There are many prominent and recognised female leaders within the Illawarra and we have approached a small portion of them with the aim of enabling this initiative to commence and to attract Government Funding for women in leadership educational programs and forums. Should you be someone or should you know someone who has contributed ‘above and beyond’ to the region because it was a passion and not just a job, and have the desire to mentor and educate future aspiring leaders within the region, please contact us at profileme@illawarraleaders.com.au |
Uniting, developing and nurturing future female leaders for a greater diversity and better future within the Illawarra
The purpose of the Illawarra Leader’s web site is to raise the awareness and profile of women in leadership within the Illawarra by promoting those who have made a considerable impression on the community for all the right reasons. It is hoped their stories and agreement to act as leadership mentors will encourage other women to play an active part in regional development and inspire future female leaders, provide a voice for women, drive and promote key advocacies, inspire youth and provide them with some direction and opportunities as well as attract Government funding for more initiatives that can make a difference to the long term sustainability of our region.
- Raise profile and awareness of current women in leadership within the Illawarra
- Inspire and encourage women to step up and play an active part in the development of our region across all sectors of our community
- Cultivate ethical and transparent future female leaders within the region through education and mentoring
- To provide access to Leadership Development, Scholarships, forums etc for education to equip women with the right tools and attributes for success
- To provide a united voice for women in the region
- To drive and promote key advocacies within the region associated to women

Wendy Fogarty
Knowledge Management Consultant
I&IBS - Important & Imperative Business Solutions
During my time as a Director of the Corrimal Chamber of Commerce and the Illawarra Business Chamber I became aware of the contribution made to the community by many successful Illawarra business people over the years.
As a strong advocate for women in leadership I am continuously inspired and motivated by other women, past and present, who have taken a step forward to contribute to the Illawarra region for all the right reasons.
Over the years I have had the pleasure of undertaking many mentoring roles with women in our region and have watched many of those I have mentored go on to become successful business owners and leaders within their sector of the community.
When researching and seeking out our current females in leadership and hearing their stories in preparation for this Illawarra Leader’s site coming together, I’m proud to say, we do have many wonderful females in leadership roles from within our region who often leave their marks and their contributions go unmentioned. The women profiled on this site have all agreed to participate due to recognising the importance of giving back into the community and being a mentor / role model to future aspiring female leaders.
Being a judge for the Illawarra Women in Business - Business Woman of the Year 2009 (which has co-incided with the launch of this initiative) has also further validated that we do in fact have women who want to step forward and take up leadership roles. These awards provide a wonderful opportunity for women to feel comfortable when self promoting their achievements. The awards then provide these women with extensive profiling and they in turn are invited to also be profiled on this web site.
As women become more courageous to step forward into leadership roles, mentoring from those in the know is more important than ever. In particular, our young emerging female leaders do look to our current leaders as role models and mentors. The development and nurturing of our future female leaders will be an important component of us moving forward with strength as a region.
My vision is that this site will help drive positive change through greater participation of women across all sectors of community which in turn will help the Illawarra develop further as a more dynamic and versatile region with diverse representation. View Wendy's Profile

It is exciting to be part of this initiative, as I believe it’s essential for women leaders in the Illawarra to share ideas and explore the values that influence us. This is also an opportunity for me to be involved in something I am deeply passionate about right from conception, and to leave a legacy for the community that transcends my role as Member of Parliament.
Mentors and role models for young leaders are vital in strengthening the Illawarra community, and such an opportunity was not available when I first became a leader.
I understand first hand the massive divide created by limited opportunities for advancement and limited access to education and resources, and this initiative allows me to use my influence as an Illawarra Leader to promote the development and mentoring of promising future leaders for the Illawarra. For all the roles we may have as women, being a leader in the community has so much potential for creating a positive influence on the Illawarra.
I have always been driven from a deep sense of purpose and values. Regardless of media, politics, other people’s agendas, I have stayed true to my course, and it gives me great pleasure to give back something that is authentic, real, and makes a difference.
Growing up in a large family my grandmother and mother a like were great mentors insisting that the females spoke up for themselves and be "leaders not sheep". This was applied to all aspects of life and has stayed with me always.
Raising two sons and two daughters taught me about balance and gave me an opportunity to view differing perspectives and work to create change.
Throughout my working life I have endeavoured to provide support, encouragement and leadership to women from diverse backgrounds in various roles. I take great pride in seeing the achievements and success of those women.
Undertaking a leadership role requires an openness with a particular commitment to listen in an ongoing learning and sharing lifetime.

My work involves creating environments where people with differing perspectives can come together to create shared visions for the future, and discover their infinite creative potential to create change. I work with CEOs, senior managers, and teams across diverse sectors including manufacturing, financial services, insurance, hospitality, health, community and Government. I have worked extensively in South Africa, UK, Singapore, USA, & Australia.
Many of the workshops that I have designed and facilitated have focused on Change, Leadership, and Technology issues for organisations including AGL, IBM, AMP, QBE, The Club Managers Association, Centrelink, Westfield, Westpac, The Benevolent Society, The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO), and SMEs in a range of industries.
Rob Owen (RIP), originally from Wollongong, was a generous mentor when I began my own leadership journey more than ten years ago. It is an honour to be part of this visionary initiative for the Illawarra; to contribute to strengthening the leadership capabilities of people in the region, as a person from the region contributed to mine. I have made the Illawarra my home, and I love the lifestyle opportunities that the region offers; it is a unique community, and I am looking forward to working with local leaders to release potential and show the rest of the world what women in the Illawarra capable of.
As a leader in values-based leadership and as a mother of two adult daughters, I recognise the need to create resources for women to access mentors and role models as well as further assistance on their leadership journeys. In providing inspiration to women in the Illawarra, Illawarra Leaders will ensure not only the future of women in leadership, but also the future of a strong leadership community in the Illawarra. I am confident that in unfolding the leadership potential of the women in our community, our community will lead others.
